VDM, Tinubu Audio And The Bigger Fake Content Problem Ahead Of 2027

The Presidency’s call for social media influencer Martins Vincent Otse, popularly known as VeryDarkMan, to face legal action over an alleged fake audio involving President Bola Tinubu has opened a wider national conversation.

According to reports, presidential spokesman Bayo Onanuga accused VDM of circulating a fake audio of the President and described it as an abuse of social media.

But beyond VDM, the issue is bigger.

Nigeria is entering a political season where fake audio, edited videos, AI-generated voices and viral misinformation could become powerful tools in shaping public opinion.

That creates a difficult balance.

On one hand, citizens must be free to criticise leaders and discuss political issues.

On the other hand, unverified or manipulated content can damage reputations, mislead voters and deepen public tension.

The real question is not just whether VDM should face the law.

The bigger question is how Nigeria can fight misinformation without using that fight to silence criticism.

As 2027 approaches, this debate will likely become more important. Citizens, influencers, journalists and political actors will all need to be more careful with what they share.

Public trust may depend not only on what people say online, but also on whether claims can be verified.

Public Pulse NG Analysis

The VDM controversy shows that Nigeria’s political space is changing.

In the past, misinformation spread mostly through rumours. Today, fake audio or AI-generated content can travel faster than official clarification.

That makes verification more important than ever.

But government also has a responsibility to respond carefully. Fighting fake content should not become an excuse to intimidate critics.

Nigeria needs accountability on both sides:

Citizens and influencers should verify before sharing.

Government should correct misinformation without shrinking free speech.

That balance may become one of the biggest digital democracy questions before 2027.
